History, art and traditions

The Municipality of Sardigliano, with its local communities, probably originated from "Sardilius" noble, or legionary from the nearby Roman settlement of Libarna, annexed to the Bishopric of Tortona in 979; it was turned into a fief for many years under the Rampini noble family of Sant'Alosio, then to the Carbonara family. From 1797, with the abolition of the feudal rights by the Napoleonic army, the town followed all the historical events of the Italian Risorgimento. In the past it was appreciated for its sulphurous water springs to breed silkworms and today it is renowned for its truffle zones and highly valued porcini mushrooms.

Tourism on-the-go

It is well worth taking a long walk along the valley both to admire the delightful small villages that form the Municipality, and soak up the nature of the uncontaminated woods and at the same time to admire the abundant wildlife all over the territory. During the patron saint's festivals and fairs don't miss tasting the typical local products offered by the various Pro Loco associations that organise the different events. The truffle fair held on the first Sunday in December is an absolute must.

What to see

The tower of Bavantore dating back to 410, part of the ancient "defensive belt" constructed by the Romans against the threat of the Goths is particularly worth a visit. The oratorio of Sant'Antonio di Malvino (or monastic institution) and the fortress of Cuquello are also a must. The historical centres of the various small settlements such as the small farm town of Giusulanella are very characteristic.

What to taste

Precious white and black truffles, excellent cured meats, fine wine, potatoes, pumpkin and chickpeas.
