History, art and traditions

A rock as pinnacle, which a 13th century castle rests on, surrounded by the oldest settlement; a territory as extensive as a county, with a 70 km web of roads amongst hills and vineyards that reach villages and settlements in a suggestive and unique countryside. Imperial diplomas mention it towards the year 1000, although its origins are definitely older. The birth of the free commune is dated at around 1250, and from then on it was governed by its own laws and statutes. Its history is a reflection of the history of the Monferrato area; a glorious and tempestuous history, all connected to the position of the township, sentinel of Casale, pillaged several times, with the clamorous exception of 21 April 1640, when civic pride and strong religious pressure prevailed over the Spanish assailants.

Tourism on-the-go

You can get to Rosignano easily from Casale (less than 10 km) and from the motorway toll booths of Casale Nord, Casale Sud and Alessandria Ovest. You can visit the municipal territory in a few hours; you will find territory guide books and information on B&B stays in the council offices. On request you can visit the inside of the most artistically interesting buildings. You can also pick up information for local wine tasting and a visit to the V. Luparia institute in the settlement of San Martino.

What to see

The unique scenery that you can enjoy from the top of the rich volcanic tuff of the town, along the natural trail of the ancient battlements. In the historical centre, the 13th century castle and the Romanesque church of S.Antonio with a wonderful double façade. Scattered around the extensive municipal territory are a number of small country churches (Berroni, San Martino, Castagnoni, Stevani, Colma, Madonna delle Grazie) as well as the medieval castles of Uviglie and Colma, the guided trail that leads to the villa of the pointillist painter Angelo Morbelli winds off from here.

What to taste

The livelihood in this territory is top quality wine production. Excellent D.O.C. wines are produced by private vineyards and by the winegrower's cooperative. Top quality grappa is distilled by the local distillery. In Valle Ghenza there are truffles; the local cured meats should be tasted. At the V. Luparia secondary agricultural institute, extra virgin olive oil.
